Detroit Churches Visited by Color Purple Associate Conductor
Pianist Victor Simonson uplifts Detroit congregations with selections from hit CD "Victory!" during visits.
(Billboard Publicity Wire) May 30, 2008 -- Feeling the spirit is easy for native New Yorker, Victor Simonson, who plans to stop by several churches in the Detroit area while on the national tour of Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple . He is scheduled to perform songs from his newly released CD, Victory! Introducing Victor Simonson during his visits to Oak Grove AME Church, 19801 Cherrylawn St, Detroit on Sunday, May 25, 2008 and Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, 18700 James Couzens Fwy, Detroit on Sunday, May 29th, 2008. Both performances will take place at the 8:00 am and 11:00 am services with an opportunity to met the artist and purchase the CD immediately following.
Pianist, composer, conductor, and baritone Simonson, has worked with soprano Denyce Graves, (classical), Donnie McClurkin (gospel), and Kim Thompson (jazz- Beyonce's drummer), as well as Fantasia and Michelle Williams (Destiny's Child) and others. He is also best known for and has defined himself as a multi-genre musician, as the Music Director for Three Mo' Tenors, the Boys Choir of Harlem, and Three Mo' Divas, popularized at the Arena Stage, Washington, DC, for which he was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical Direction. His CD has been hailed as Neo-Eclectic.
You can also see Simonson perform in The Color Purple Tuesday through Thursday, May 20-22, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 23, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 25, at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Performances May 26 through June 1 are Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m.; Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
